introspection

These are songs that I have had on repeat for hours at a time until a feeling surfaced or subsided, whichever the case might have been. These are the songs that I have played over and over while trying to name an overwhelming emotion, or songs that inspire overwhelming emotion in me. Songs that matched the beauty of a setting and created a sensory experience. For me, these are songs that make me ache with emotion. Even if these songs don't overload your brain like they did mine they are beautiful songs for those introspective nights, those mellow car rides, those times when you need a soundtrack to think to.

Does He Love You - Rilo Kiley
One of my most vivid memories of this song involves riding a bus while the sun was setting right after a nice rain. I stared out the window at Lake Michigan and listened to this song on repeat for the full thirty minute ride. Beautiful and soulful, I often find this song bringing me close to tears. I love songs that tell stories and the narrative in this one is wonderfully done.

Longer That I'm Out Here - Kevin Devine

This is my walking to class on a rainy day while deep in thought song. That is specific, but you might be surprised by how often that category is needed. The lyrics, the music, and the feeling behind it inspires a kind of optimistic pessimism in me. I feel the contrast of the cynical lyrics and the hopeful tone. I love all of Kevin Devine's work, you'll probably be seeing him a lot in my posts.

Slow Motion - Third Eye Blind
This song is mournful and gorgeous. It has a central theme of seeing beauty in awful things (such as spousal abuse, cocaine induced nosebleeds, and a man being shot). It is the sort of song that could make you see the twisted beauty in such things.

To Be Alone With You - Sufjan Stevens

Christian undertone and all, I love this song. Usually a Christian message in a song makes me dislike it. Immediately. Take that as you will, but I might just be allergic to all things Jesus. At any rate, this song is amazing. It is beautiful and meaningful no matter what meaning you attach to it.

Burn Your Life Down - Tegan and Sara
This is often my heartbreak song. I have sobbed through it, hurt through it, felt through it. I feel the last 40 seconds.

Both Hands - Ani DiFranco
Another heart break song. Slow, beautiful, and heart-wrenching.

Next Tuesday I will be sure to throw in some perkier music. This is a Debby Downer of a music post. :)

Great songs! Does He Love You has definitely always been one of my heartbreak songs. So beautiful and so, so sad.
