Kings of Convenience

Aaaah, sorry for not posting anything last week, I was in hospital and I didn't have anything prepared in advance. I hope it won't happen again ♥ Anyway, for this week's post I've prepared some songs by one of my favourite bands :)

Kings of Convenience are a Norwegian duo that plays really mellow, melodic acoustic pop/rock/folk. Most of their songs are slow and soft, sung by both artists in harmony. They remind me of Simon & Garfunkel :D
Homesick
I Don't Know What I Can Save You From
Summer on the Westhill
Parallel
Gold in the Air of Summer
Manhattan Skyline
The Build-Up
Envoy

And a little bonus...
Damien Rice - Delicate

I have Kings of Convenience and Damien Rice on the same playlist, and this song started playing when I was typing up this post, so I thought I'd include it, since the style is a bit similar.

Hilarious show tunes

I've always been a musical girl, so I thought I'd post some of the funniest showtunes I know of today.

Avenue Q - Schadenfreude - Avenue Q is already a classic, and this song will never stop being hilarious.
Evil Dead: The Musical - Join Us - Not enough people know this musical, which is a shame. Not only is it based on the funniest film ever, but it's also a comedic splatter musical. It doesn't get much better than that.
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown - Little Known Facts - Ridiculously funny lyrics, that can become useful if you ever need to explain to a kid where snow comes from.
Spamalot - Diva's Lament - Every musical girl's theme song.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - Prayer of the Comfort Counselor - This doesn't really go under hilarious show tunes, but it is a fantastic song and therefore a good song to end this post with. :)

MC Chris is dead and he ain't ever coming back

This is the song I turn to when I'm tired of drowning in depression (and after I spend a few hours listening to Death Cab for Cutie while driving home from work).

MC Chris Is Dead by mc chris.

It is rap, yes, and other than my inexplainable, and at times worrying, love for Tupac Shakur, this song is the only rap song that I love, without also simultaneously hating it.

Why? Because it's a rap about zombies.

Provided here are the lyrics: Behold. )

This is not a song meant inspires the masses (unless you're wanting to raise a zombie army), there's no secret meaning hidden in the way the words are place or how they're pronounced, and it doesn't make you stay awake and debate the meaning of life or the vices and sins of humanity. But it is so funny, guys. ♥

apocalypse now

I spent the whole week reading comic books. I read Chosen and I'm currently reading Preacher and the thing in common these two comics have is the thematic, the whole 'religious' background and somehow, the Apocalypse which is represented in both of them. And I had this song on shuffle while reading. Johnny Cash is my favorite musician ever, I love everything he recorded; he's just THE MAN, you know.
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around
So for today, I thought this song would be ideal. Mostly because it has those two things that basically ate my brain this week.

Enjoy!

Breaking the pattern!

I'm going to break the pattern guys, and post only one song today. [:

But it is, as of... last Monday at 11 o'clock at night or so, my favorite song ever ever ever. It has literally been on repeat every time I turn on my iPod, in the car blasting through the speakers on the highway, or in my computer, which is kind of epic (as such a thing hasn't happened since I fell in love with Imogen Heap two years ago).

This is that song:

Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime

(And this is its music video.)

Why do I love this song? Because I can listen to it for hours and not get bored. It is so silly and makes me laugh so hard, and there are times this week where I've been feeing real shitty, and this song brought me up (specifically the line: This is not my beautiful wife!) each and every tiem. It's kinda bouncy and has one of the coolest beats, and every time I liten to it, it kind of leaves me feeling cool and refreshed (might be the repeated references to water). Once in a lifetime has a message in there, too (wiki mentions existentialism, but personally I go the middle-age crisis route), which just makes this for me.

Eulogy Saturday

[personal profile] pippin's which breath will be your last? mix.
All my theme ideas were stolen, but there were no song overlaps so I'll save them for later. To-day, instead, I present a selection of songs about death. One's piano-led and melancholic, two are accordion-driven and mischievous, and the other two are guitar-based and... not similar otherwise.

Dark Dark Dark - Fement in Dm
The Whitlams - Charlie No. 3
Okkervil River - Westfall
Doug Anthony Allstars - Warsong
Kim Vermillion - The Organ Donor's March
Also, if you haven't seen it yet :: The Chasers' Eulogy Song.

(I would have done a Sad People Talk About Their City And Then Drown Themselves mix, but I only have two songs for that (Under the Bridge and Love This City)! Any suggestions for more?)

6am mix

I hate waking up early. I'd do everything to be able to sleep in every day, but my university career wouldn't last long if I stopped showing up for morning classes... Fortunately, I'm one of these silly people who get up and dance whenever they hear music, so turning upbeat songs helps me get out of bed. These songs are not exactly what you'd hear at a party, but they're good for stretching a bit in the morning :)

Alanis Morissette - Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)
Nelly Furtado - Força
Halfcooked - Bad Reputation
Noah and the Whale - 5 Years Time
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
Regina Spektor - On the Radio
Queen - Hammer to Fall

Mediafire hates me today, I'll add a download link for whole mix later :|

Songs for tired moments

Due to being ridiculously tired today I decided to post some of the songs I play when I just want the world to go away for a while.

Astor Piazzolla - Adios Nonino: A tango by the master of tangoes.
Philip Glass - Changing Opinion: Minimalism, with Bernard Fowler on vocals.
Karl Jenkins - Grey: From the work In These Stones Horizons Sing, commissioned for the opening of Wales Millennium Centre. The soloist here is the fantastic Bryn Terfel.
Anne Sofie Von Otter - Les Bergers: From Chants de Noel.
Gabriel Fauré - Pie Jesu: From Requiem.
Gli Scapoli - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face: Sung by the Norwegian men's choir Gli Scapoli.
Eva Dahlgren - Stenmannen (The Stone Man): Swedish lyrics, but amazing music.

While browsing through my library looking for a theme for today's post, I decided to post some of the songs that my fiancee and I have put in our mixes to each other. So, here are love songs.

You're The Good Things - Modest Mouse

She Is - Sufjan Stevens

I Melt With You - Nouvelle Vague

How Good It Can Be - The 88

Perfect Fingers - Ani DiFranco

1, 2, 3, 4 - The Plain White T's

Indian Lover - Lakes

These are the songs that always make me smile and think of my love. Whether poppy like 1, 2, 3, 4 or soulful like She Is, these are all beautiful songs in their own way. I hope you enjoy them. ♥

My lateness/absence & future posting!

Sorry, all! Monday is my assigned day, but yesterday, I found that my home internet didn't want to work, and ... I have a variable disability, so it's difficult for me to get out of my house sometimes. Yesterday was one of those days, so, no internet access. The previous week, I was at a concert... *G*

I hope neither [personal profile] ineffable nor [personal profile] justmoregay will mind an extra post today to replace the lack of post yesterday and last week? Would you? I can't do it right now, but I will be able to when I have my laptop, later today, and I have so much music I'm desperate to share with all of you that it made me crazy to have to miss yesterday's.

Any objections, please let me know. Thanks :)

Haunting - a mixtape

Once again, I am posting something I didn't plan to post. I was going to post a few happy songs to brighten up Sunday (as it's raining over here) but I made the mistake (or not) of reading the last few chapters of Let the Right One In, and I am haunted by it in the best possible way. These songs reflect that, not just haunting in relation to ghosts or monsters, but in all senses of the word (but mostly sadness).

Details )

download ; 66.35MB

Bonus tracks!
Death Cab For Cutie:
Passenger Seat
Brothers on a Hotel Bed

...I swear my next post will have some happy songs in it. D:

Eurovision Saturday

So. Eurovision is this weekend. I am a huge Eurovision fan. I love the crazy, the europop, the women coming out of the pianos, the exploding instruments, the dancing, the clothing reveals, the political voting... I love it all.

So here are some of my personal favourite Eurovision entries from the last four years. Because most of the joy comes from the stage performances I've included YouTube links as well as .mp3s.

this post coming to you on wings of song )

Actual music next week, I promise. :p

(P.S. Please please please no spoilers for Eurovision 2009, I have to record it all. ;___; )

for my first entry, a mix

a movie script ending (acoustic) - death cab for cutie
collide (acoustic) - howie hay
oceanic (acoustic) - imaad wasif
you and i both (acoustic) - jason mraz
wonderwall (acoustic) - noel gallagher
sway (acoustic) - the perishers

whispered voices (in my ear)

Well, to be honest, I had a different idea for my first post but some stuff happened and today I'm pretty useless due to certain tv show I love and I wanted to share this at some point, anyway so here you have it.

I love acoustic versions, you know? Sometimes even more than the normal versions, especially if the song is somehow emotional because I think making it acoustic adds something more to the whole interpretation. And yes, I'm all for pretty versions of songs I love. Enjoy!
