triple-threat Monday

Because I missed the last two weeks thanks to health and computer issues...

Soundtracks--
Donnie Darko - one of the most beautiful, vaguely creepy collections of music I've ever had. I love it.
NCIS - 2 discs. Some metal, some softer stuff, and it includes pieces from Cote de Pablo (Ziva) and Stop Making Friends, the band Pauley Perrette (Abby) is in. Good stuff.

Nerina Pallot - Fires - Alterna-pop, I'd call this... Sort of rainy-day soundtrack in places, with poppy music that belies her lyrics in others.

Metric - Fantasies - Hard to quantify their genre, sort of folk-rock-pop-electro, but they're great live, and this new album may be their best yet.

Metric - Grow Up And Blow Away - First, late-released album; this has always been my favourite of their work.

for when it hurts

Because I am such an uplifting person... Here are songs that I listen to for different sorts of depressions:

Whether You Fall - Tracy Bonham

This song is ridiculously beautiful. It is the perfect rainy day song. Mellow, and yet the message behind the song is uplifting.

Bad Habit - Dresden Dolls

Girl Anachronism - Dresden Dolls

These two are my crazy!depression songs. The angry and intense sort!

Sunday post

Just one today, guys. ♥

Iron & Wine - The Trapeze Swinger

This is, hands down, my favorite song of theirs. Mostly for the repetition (and the vocalizing), but also because this is one of the few songs where I'm content to just sit back and listen, where I'm not really all concerned with the symbolism behind the lyrics (which is rare for me). I mean, the subject matter isn't all that uplifting, but listening to this just... makes me melt in my seat and tip my head back while taking a deep breath.

Grey Eye Glances

Sorry my post is late - had some internet problems yesterday. Grrr, new ISP and troubles already? *facepalm*

I found this band thanks to Last.fm radio, while listening to October Project. They're also from Pennsylvania, like most of the members of the aforementioned band. Their music is beautiful and, unlike October Project, they're still together! This album is from 1997.

The Classics

So, today I wanted to celebrate the classics of the world. Music that, if you were to sing it in any part of the world, you would know that (at least) majority of the people around you will recognize what it is, exactly, that is coming out of your mouth.

Yup.

The classics. ;]

Lion King - I just can't wait to be king
Pocahontas - Colors of the wind
The Little Mermaid - Under the sea
Alladin - A whole new world

Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)
My Favorite - Le Monster
Cat Power - Werewolf
Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
The Rasmus - Ghostbusters (cover)

Also also also a YouTube link : Die Ärzte - Junge. Apparently the lyrics are about growing up or something, but the videoclip is about the band defending themselves from zombies. While rocking out.

favourites :)

Today I have for you...

Lacuna Coil's latest album, Shallow Life.
- I love LC! Their lead singer, Cristina Scabbia, is gorgeous, and they're great live - one of the best symphonic metal bands out there. A good introduction for anyone unfamiliar with the genre.

October Project - a compilation
- A zip file of various songs from the folk-alternative band October Project, another of my favourite bands. I cannot think of a single song they did during their time together that I even feel remotely negative towards. I like them all, and love most! :) Two vocalists featured here, primary (and former) lead Mary Fahl, and old-backup-new-lead Marina Belica, and both of them have beautiful voices.

Apologize? Not so much, no.

This post is not going to be full of angry songs, mostly because I'm not angry so much as affronted. So, here ya go: songs about apologizing (or not), minding your own business, and picking a fight.

OneRepublic - Apologize (not the Timbaland version)
Barenaked Ladies - Too Little Too Late
3OH!3 - PunkBitch
3OH!3 - Holler Till You Pass Out
Breaking Benjamin - Forget It
Smile Empty Soul - All My Problems

I'm really sorry I haven't updated for like, two weeks? Anyway, I don't really have a link of my own for you today but more like a recommendation.

We all know what happened yesterday and even when, personally, I didn't really care about Michael Jackson as a person, I can't deny the huge influence and impact he had in the pop music, and in the industry in general.

So, I thought you might want to check this place out because tons of people are sharing his music because of the sad news we got yesterday.
Michal Jackson songs via Hypem
He really had great songs and even when it was not exactly my time when he was on top of the world, I still like a lot of them because I think they're ageless. So, enjoy!

Saturday not yet

Comedy musicians woo!

Paul McDermott - The Penis Song
You will look awful silly
When you free willy,
Shouting out "All hands on deck"
And "thar she blows"

Flight of the Conchords - Bowie
Receiving transmission from David Bowie's nipple antennae!
Do you read me, Lieutenant Bowie?

Tim Minchin - Ten Foot Cock & A Few Hundred Virgins
So if I put my foot in a stinker
You'd assume the existence of a sphincter
Thus you don't need to be a great thinker
To conclude that God's a bum

Tom Lehrer - Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
When they see us coming, the birdies all try and hide
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide

Tim Minchin - If I Didn't Have You
But I'm just saying,
I don't think you're special.
I - I mean, I think you're special,
But you fall within a bell curve

Amateur Transplants - Disney Time
Mickey Mouse felt his vertibrae snap,
With his head caught in a trap.
Eating cheese and full of disease in his natural state.

Axis of Awesome - Bird Plane
I'm more than a bird,
I'm more than a plane...
I'm a bird plane

Midsummer...

Yesterday was Midsummer's Day and the summer solstice for the northern hemisphere, so I figured I'd tip the nod to my pagan leanings for this week's post... :) Only a small one this time, though. (Been too laid up with migraines mostly.)

Stormwinds, Elaine Silver.

Midsummer Fires, Blood Ruby.

The Father's-Day-Post-That-Isn't

I blame this one entirely on Coffee Prince, as I didn't really like this song until I saw episode nine. It's kind of my favorite song right now, and is on repeat on player. Whenever I listen to this, I feel like I sould be staring at an ex and trying not to cry, but it's more because of how she manages to project the emotion through her voice than the lyrics themselves.

Azure Ray - Across the Ocean

And also, two versions of "Lovelly Allen" by Holy Fuck, because I was talking to my dad about uploading songs, and when I asked him which ones I should upload he said these. [: So there ya go. (They're both instrumentals, btw.)

Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen

Saturday swords

Well, I was going to post some monster songs to complement [personal profile] dorkpie's, but then I had a... disagreement... with iTunes and I lost my playlists and I can't remember half the songs I picked. oops.

So here are two pairs of battle songs instead!

Led Zeppelin - Achilles' Last Stand
Oh to ride the wind, to tread the air above the din

Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence
The flame of Troy will shine bright

Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore
The ringwraiths ride in black - ride on!

Blind Guardian - When Time Stands Still (At The Iron Hill)
Like a thunderstorm he's crushing down the Noldor's proudest king

I'll be afk next weekend - would any weekdayers like to swap? Or I'll just post early.

(no subject)

I'm usually 100% against politics/religion in music, but this one song I can't resist. It's a heavy metal version of a Catholic hymn, sung in Latin. My Latin teacher mentioned it when she tried to convince us that there are some uses for Latin, I downloaded it out of curiosity and I have to say it's really great :D
Though according to my teacher, their pronunciation is terrible.

Helloween - Laudate Dominum

Music from the mountains and the fjords

I was in the middle of moving back to Norway from Denmark last week, and therefore I wasn't able to finish my post unfortunately. But this week, in honour of coming back home, I decided to make a post with only Norwegian music, as the big patriot that I am. Some of it with Norwegian lyrics and some with English (but music is universal, isn't that what they say?). Enjoy. :)

Gåte - Bendik og Årolilja
Odd Nordstoga - Heim til Mor
Maria Mena - Your Glasses
Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monologue
Kaizers Orchestra - Mr Kaizer, hans Constanze og Meg
